Matron Edith Cavell
A World War I Hero

The children are taken back to October 1915. They meet Sister Elizabeth Wilkins, the friend and colleague of Matron Edith Cavell, who has been imprisoned for treason in Brussels.

The children hear about the life of a Red Cross nurse during the war and learn of the plight of Edith Cavell and her courageous deeds to help soldiers of the Great War.

They are introduced to three important words: bravery, courage and duty, all of which are important during this ‘War to End all Wars’.

With the help of a little costume and props, the children are put through their paces by Sister Wilkins to see if they could be as brave and courageous as Edith to fulfil their duty, both at home and on the front line.

They are all in role for one hour, taking part in Home Front activities, learning a song from The Great War and re-enacting a scene from a Red Cross field hospital in 1915.

““Thank you so much for your input into our Edith Cavell and WWI topic. The children loved it.”
Belmont Primary School, Erith
